 Here's a question: are the dropped sessions and the (null) StatSession
 lines in the log consistent with a Varnish instance that is simply
 overloaded? Could a large number of clients be holding a session open and
 causing all my problems? I'm wondering if there's an actual or perhaps
 inadvertent DDoS going on here.

 I've upgraded to 2.1.4 and also tweaked my params to increase the thread
 pool size and decrease sess_timeout and send_timeout and things seem to be
 doing better.
